1 Kings 1-4

1 Kings 1
David's reign comes to a close as he advances in years. A beautiful young woman is brought to David to keep him warm, though no physical relations occur with her 1-4. Adonijah takes it upon himself to declare himself king 5-6. He gains the support of some of David's men but not all 7-10. Note: You would think that after all that had happened that these men would inquire of the Lord and get His direction in these matters rather than acting on their own. When one acts independent of the Lord his or her choices appear to be right (see: Provebs 14:12). Nathan, Benaiah, and Bathsheba approach David about this since David had said Solomon would be king 11-27. Their wise approach asking David if he changed his mind and did not let anyone in on it 27. David affirms his oath to make Solomon king after him 28-31. The Lord was in this, for is was an oath before the Lord, which the Lord did not correct or ammend. Solomon is anointed and appointed king and there is great celebation 32-40. When Adonijah hears he fears and his guests dispersed (party is over) 41-49. Adonijah goes to the altar of the Lord and holds on to its horns (symbolic of holding on to the Lord for mercy) 49-51. Solomon is willing to spare his life if he proves himself worthy and sends him home 52-53. Note: Let me suggest that part of this worthiness would include his submission to and support of Solomon as king. If he rebels or refuses, that would be treason and is punishable by death. Spiritually, we as believers in Jesus are to be submitted to His Lordship and walk in a manner worthy of the Lord (see: Ephesians 4:1, Philippians 1:27, Colossians 1:10).

1 Kings 2
Before David's death he gives a charge to Solomon to walk in the ways of the Lord with the promise of His blessings 1-4. He asks for him to execute Joab for the innocent blood he shed 5-6. He is to show kindness to the sons of Barzillai 7. Shimei is also to be dealt with 8-9. David dies and is buried in Jerusalem after a reign totaling 40 years 10-11. Adonijah asks for Abishag in marriage 13-21. Solomon responds with the death sentence upon Adonijah, which is quickly carried out 22-25. Note: This may appear harsh for such a request, however implied in this is an affront to Solomon's rule since she was David's servant. Apparently there is more to this than the text tells us. Adonijah was not acting in a worthy manner (1:52). Solomon then removes Abiathar from being a priest 26-27. He executes Joab 28-34. Benaiah take his place 35. Shimei is then put to death after violating the terms of his restricted living arrangements 36-46. This helped to establish Solomon as king. Note: 'A new broom sweeps clean' as the saying goes. Solomon 'cleaned house' by caring for these matters which David was unable to deal with. This  also indicates that though time passes and administrations change, the guilty will not escape justice. God will see to it; if not in this life, it will happen before the Judge of all the earth when the books will be opened and everyone will give account of himself to the Lord (Revelation 20:11-15).

1 Kings 3
Solomon marries Pharaoh's daughter and makes an alliance with Egypt 1. She was eventually brought to Jerusalem. This was later to be a mistake because these foreign woman drew his heart away from the true God. The Lord appears to Solomon in a dream and offers him 'a blank check' (ask whatever you want from me). Solomon asks for discernment to govern the people 5-9. The Lord was pleased with his response and gives him wisdom and much more 10-14. Note: If the Lord made this offer to you, how would you respond, honestly ? Solomon offers scarifies to the Lord 15. Solomon demonstrates the wisdom God bestowed, in the ruling he made between two prostitutes, one of whose child had died. 16-27. All Israel was amazed at his God-given wisdom seen in this case.
Note: Even prostitutes deserve justice. Those who work as lawyers and judges in our land should seek true justice and wisdom in their cases and rulings. True wisdom comes from the Lord and is given to all who ask the Lord for it. (James 1:5)

1 Kings 4
Solomon organized the kingdom and had various officials 1-6 and twelve district governors 7-19, two of whom were married to his daughter 11,15. Solomon's daily provisions stagger the imagination 22-24. During his reign the nation of Israel had peace and plenty 20,24-25. He also had 12,000 horses 26 and everything has a proper place 27-28. His God given wisdom was greater than the wisdom of the wisest of his day 29-31 He spoke 3,000 proverbs and wrote 1005 songs 32. He applied this insight to all of life, particularly to the animal world 33. (We can learn much from what God has made in this world). So great was his wisdom that men from all over the world came to hear him 34. Solomon was a type of Christ, however Jesus Christ is greater than Solomon (Matthew 12:42) being more than a man endowed with wisdom, but the very source of wisdom (Colossians 2:3) since He is God in human form (Colossians 1:15-17,19; 2:9). Note: Have you received Jesus into your heart by faith, not only for wisdom but for the forgiveness of all your sins (Colossians 1:19-20, 2:13-14)
