First Samuel continues the history of God's people as they move
from judges leading them to wanting a king to rule over them. It
records the establishment of kingship in Israel. God grants them a
king in Saul (who was just like the kings which the nations around
them had). He is rejected by the Lord and David (a man after God's
own heart) is chosen by God to succeed Saul as king. This book
follows the conflict that occurs between Saul and David and reveals
how a man of God reflects the character of God in difficult
circumstances. It more importantly shows the power and purposes of
God, who will raise up whom He wills to be king over His people. We
also have the role of the prophet seen in Samuel. He served the
Lord as both judge, and prophet. The role of the prophet was
to deliver God's message to God's people. This was needed since the
priests (seen in Eli and his sons) failed in communicating God's
Word and teaching the people the Law of the Lord.
