2 Chronicles 1
Solomon is established as king and made great by the Lord 1. The
Lord gave Solomon a 'blank check' when He offered to do for him
whatever Solomon requested. Solomon requested wisdom from the Lord
to govern the people. This pleased the Lord and He gave him over
and above what he asked for 7-13. Note: What would your response be
with such an offer from the Lord ? (consider Ephesians 3:20-21 in
its context of 3:14-19). Solomon accumulated chariots and horses
along with much gold and wealth 14-17. I wonder if this was the
starting point of his downfall and decline away from the Lord ?
What 'things' might draw you away from wholehearted devotion to the
Lord ?
2 Chronicles 2
Solomon made preparations for the building of the temple with
153,600 workers (2,17-18) along with skilled workers hired from
Tyre 3-10. Note: The message Solomon sends the king of Tyre details
all that is needed for this building project for the glory of God
3-5. God is bigger than any temple, no matter how grand 6. Those
with skills are needed 8-11. Hiram responds first by giving praise
to the Lord, then giving Solomon what he asked for 12-16. Note:
This project involved foreigners and aliens 3,16-18. The
interaction of Solomon and the Jews provided them an opportunity to
speak of the one true and living God, with those who helped to
build the temple 5. Likewise, we can use the interactions we have
as an opportunity to bear witness to Jesus Christ. Note: I see the
principle here that the building of God's temple (spiritually) -
the church - requires the involvement of many people, not just one
or a few. Are you part of God's building program (Ephesians
2:14-22) ?
2 Chronicles 3
The temple is being built and the work is described and detailed.
It was, no doubt, a beautiful sight with all the artistic work and
the gold which overlaid everything. The temple was the place where
the Lord would put His name and the people would come to pray and
worship the Lord.
Sometimes we call the temple or even our church gathering place the
house of God. God is not contained to a building, for He is
everywhere present. However, is the place of our worship a
place that reflects the greatness and grandeur of God ? Even the
details of our lives are to show forth His glory.
2 Chronicles 4
One item of the temple furnishing was the Sea which contained
approximately 17,500 gallons of water that was used by the priests
for ceremonial washings 4-6. That must have been massive. This
washing was part of the sacrificial worship that the Lord had
commanded. Note: To approach the Lord one has to be clean and
undefiled We are washed by the blood of Christ and forgiven our
sins. God's Word 'cleanses' us as we believe in Christ and are
saved, and also when we confess our sins after we fail (Ephesians
5:25-27, 1 John 1:9). Note: Everything in the temple worship is
meant to teach us something of the Lord and His great salvation
which is found only in His son Jesus Christ.
2 Chronicles 5
The Ark is brought into the temple with great joy and celebration.
Nothing was in the Ark accept the two tablets (of the Law) 10. This
would indicate the central place the Word of God (His Law) has. It
is at the very heart of worship and the sacrifice. The Word of God
is eternal (1 Peter 1:25)
Music was a large part of this celebration 11-13 as the Levites
play instruments and sing. Note: Do you make a joyful noise to the
Lord out of joy for His presence in your life ? They declare God is
good and His love endures forever 13b. The Lord's presence comes in
a cloud which fills the temple. So 'heavy' is His presence that the
priests are unable to ministry before the Lord 14. Oh that God
would visit our corporate times of worship in such a manner that we
would not be able to deny His presence and bow in humility and
reverence.
1 Chronicles 6
Solomon reminds the people that the Lord kept His promises, as seen
in the completion of the temple 1-11. Solomon prays to
the Lord, asking the Lord, to heed the prayers of His people
offered in the temple and towards it. 12-21. He prays that prayers
offered in confession and repentance would be acceptable to and
answered by the Lord 22-40. Note: Prayer is a natural response of
God's people even in the midst of troubles. Solomon prays for the
priests and the people 41-42. Note: Do you pray for the Lord to
answer the prayers of others as a testimony to Himself ?
1 Chronicles 7
The Temple is dedicated with much celebration 1-10. The Lord
appears to Solomon and answers his prayer 11-13. Note: The fimilar
verse 14 is set in the context of prayer that is offered by the
wayward people of God. Though spoken to Israel these words can
apply to any of God's people who would set their hearts to seeking
Him ! Solomon and the people had a responsibility to seek and
follow the Lord, wholeheartedly 17-18. Failure would bring the
judgment of God and removal from the land 19-22. Sadly, this was
their history as it unfolded. Note: God's people are in a bad place
when the unbelieving world is able to see the principles of God at
work, but somehow His own fail to see it or even care 22. How might
this be true in your life or in the church today ?
