Ecclesiastes - Introduction
The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon 1:1 and can be
called the record of his journey of trying to find meaning in the
activities of life apart from the Lord. Solomon started with a
heart for God, but his many foreign wives turned his heart away
from the Lord. He spent many years looking for 'something' of
lasting value and meaning in life. He tested every arena of life to
the extreme. His conclusion is the refrain of the book
'meaningless, meaningless, utter meaninglessness (or vanity -KJV),
everything is meaningless' 1:2. Solomon teaches us that life 'under
the sun' (another repeated phrase), which indicates a life lived
from a purely human perspective; has no meaning or lasting value.
By the end of his journey and to conclude his 'journal' (the book)
he states one must remember his/her Creator (God) 12:1 if one is to
have a life worth living, with lasting value12:13-14. This book is
so timely, because most in our day are searching for the meaning
and purpose of life. It is not found in material things, nor in
activities, or accomplishments but, in a real personal relationship
with God. As you read Ecclesiastes keep that in mind or you too
will 'through up your hands' and conclude 'vanity, meaningless' is
everything.
