Exodus 1
The setting is in Egypt where the Israelites grow and multiply.
Pharaoh's fear was that they would join and enemy in war and leave
the country. 1-10. Was Egypt 'blessed' economically and in other
ways because of the Jewish people ? If they dreaded the Israelites
how did they make them there slaves ? Maybe it was slowly and
subtlety over time through laws passes against them.
The Midwives did not obey Pharaoh, but feared God 15-17. Did they
arrive just in time, so to speak, so that they could make their
case before Pharaoh and be accurate 18-19. God did bless them for
fearing Him 21. Note: Putting babies to death is not a new or
modern tragedy. This happens because our sinful hearts are the
same. This is why God gives us a new heart through the new birth. A
heart that champions life and seeks to hold it as a sacred gift of
God who gives it.
Exodus 2
Moses is a descendant of Levi 1-2. The providence of God brought
him into Pharaoh's house. His mother is 'hired' to nurse and care
for him. I think this is how he was told of his true identity and
the true God even though he was trained and educated in Pharaoh's
court. 1-10. Moses saw injustice that caused him to act and kill an
Egyptian, his fellow Hebrews did not appreciate his help 11-14.
Note: None of us can deliver ourselves or anyone else from the
'bondage' and 'enslavement' of sin. In fear, Moses flees, marries
and has children. 15-22. His life can be seen in 3 segments: 40
years in Egypt, 40 years as a shepherd, and 40 years leading the
people in the wilderness. God was preparing him all along. What
encouragement to know that God takes notice of our burdens and
sufferings. God heard... remembered...looked...and was concerned
24-25, however He did not act immediately. God will and timing is
always perfect.
Exodus 3
God appears to Moses in a burning bush 1-6. Moses is afraid to look
at God 6b. I do not think many of us fully grasp the awesome
presence of God. Holy fear is godly fear and that is healthy and
right ! Note: God says He comes to deliver His people, yet chooses
to work through Moses 7-8,10. The sign God gives Moses is '20-20
hind sight'. After the fact you will know 12. Like Moses I would
like proof now, before hand. God reveals His name "I AM THAT I AM"
14. This name shows us that God is eternally self existent. HE is
the One who was, is and is to come. The LORD is His name forever 15
which means it does not change later to Buddah or Allah. God uses
Pharaoh and his stubbornness to show his glory 19-20. God
knows his stubborn heart and uses his choices to bring judgment and
show His glory.
Exodus 4
God gives Moses signs to help the people believe 1-9. Moses
objects, yet God reminds Moses and us that He is the one who makes
one to speak and see. He also makes the blind, mute, and deaf 11.
What encouragement that God will help Moses (and us) to speak and
teach us what to say 12,15-16. Note: If Israel is God's First Born
Son (22); then the Church is the second born ? Moses and Aaron meet
and show the signs of God to the people. They believe and bow in
worship 27-31.
Exodus 5
Moses appears before Pharaoh and gives the Lord's message 'Let my
people go!' Pharaoh does not recognize the Lord. He refuses and
makes the work of the people more intense 1-18. The Israelites feel
doomed 19-21. Moses cries out 'why' to the Lord 22-23. Many times
situations get much worse before the Lord acts. Why maybe answered
in part when we see God deliever and rescue us from circumstances
that are humanly impossible - so that only the Lord gets the
credit.
Exodus 6
God reassures Moses giving him insight into His plan. God acts
because God always keeps His promises and fulfills His Covenants
1-5. God makes 7 promises "I will bring you out...free you...
redeem you...take you as my own...be your God...bring you to the
land...give it to you 6-9. With discouragement and cruel
bondage the people will not listen 9-10. Heads of families are
listed 13-25 and a summary is stated 26-27. Note: God keeps good
records of each individual life.
Exodus 7
God again sends Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh 1-6. Verse 1 illustrates
what a prophet does 'speaks the word of God to individuals and
people'. God makes His name known by the powerful acts He
undertakes 5. The signs Moses and Aaron give are imitated by the
wise men and sorcerers through their secret arts. Satan is the
great counterfeiter ! The abilities of the Egyptians come not from
God but are demonic in origin 8-12. Pharaoh again hardens his
heart. 13
The first plague God sends is water turned to blood 14-21. This is
again imitated 22. Pharaoh hardens his heart 22-23. Note: The Nile
was consider sacred by the Egyptians. Each plague God brings is a
judgment against the false gods of Egypt.
