Ezra - Introduction
The book of Ezra records the return of some Jewish exiles from
the Babylonian captivity. Not manyreturned to the land, in fact
there were three groups that returned at three different times
under three different leaders. The first was under Zerubbabel in
536 BC (covered in 1-6 of Ezra), the second was under Ezra (7-9)
and the third was under Nehemiah (recorded in the book that bears
his name). The first was a return to build the Temple, the second
was to rebuild the people (teaching) and the third was to rebuild
the wall. Note: The events of the book of Esther occurred between
the first and second return. This book teaches how God restores His
people after judgment. It also illustrates the importance of God's
word in the life of His people. The two go hand in hand. Note: The
prophets Haggai and Zechariah ministered during the time covered by
the book of Ezra.
