leaders who delivered the Israelites from of the hands of their
enemies. While the judges lived, the people had relative peace, but
as soon as they died the people returned to worship of idols, which
lead to bondage and oppression by their enemies. It was a cycle
Rest - Rebellion - Retribution - Repentance- Restoration (Jensen)
There are six of these 'cycles' in Judges. This period of Israel's
history is characterized by compromise, corruption, and confusion
(McGee). In the midst of this the Lord still extended mercy
and grace to His backsliding people.
