Song of Solomon - Introduction
This is the third book written by Solomon, however it may be the
first one he wrote. Someone has suggested that he wrote The Song of
Solomon (or Song of Songs - the best of his works) early in life,
Proverbs in mid-life and Ecclesiastes later in life. I do not know
if this can be proven conclusively, but it is an interesting
thought to ponder as you read each book. The Song of Solomon is
about true marital love. Because of the imagery in the book, one
tradition suggested that Jewish men were not permitted to read it
until they were 30 years old. It may have reflected Solomon's
first wife, his true love. In a greater way this love poem pictures
the love relationship between The Lord Jesus Christ and His bride,
the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). It also reflects the Lord's
(Jehovah) love for Israel (the wife of Jehovah). It also pictures
the relationship of each individual believer with the Lord. Note:
Sadly, Solomon later married many women, in defiance of the Lord
and they turned his heart away from the Lord (1 Kings 11:1-8). This
inspired book in God's Word shows sacredness of marriage and the
love that relationship is to have. It's message is presented in
parts with both the husband, wife, and attendants having parts to
say. Note: Knowing some of the culture and imagery is helpful to
understanding and interpreting what the Lord is saying to us in
this portion of His Word.
